Burke Town School Student, Marshall May Wins Vermont Title in National Civics Bee

June 26, 2025

We are thrilled to share some exciting news from Burke Town School—8th grader Marshall May has been named the Vermont State Champion in the National Civics Bee!

Marshall competed against nine of the top middle school students from across the state in the final round held at the historic Barre Opera House. The competition, hosted by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce and emceed by WCAX’s Darren Perron, challenged students to answer tough questions on U.S. civics, government, and democracy. Marshall impressed the judges and audience alike with his thoughtful responses and composed presence throughout the competition.

Following his win, Marshall shared a powerful message, saying, “I would say I’m a proud Vermonter and ashamed American who really wants to make sure that America is not straying away from its core beliefs.” His participation in the Civics Bee was not just about demonstrating knowledge—it was about using his voice to inspire civic awareness and engagement.

Marshall received a $1,000 cash prize and, more importantly, earned the opportunity to represent Vermont at the national finals in Washington, D.C., where he will compete for a chance to win $100,000.

The National Civics Bee aims to promote civics education and foster the next generation of informed and engaged citizens. Marshall’s victory is a testament to the importance of student voice and civic responsibility, and we couldn’t be prouder to have him represent our school and state on the national stage.

Congratulations, Marshall! Your Burke Town School and ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ East communities are cheering you on as you prepare to compete in D.C.!

We would also like to congratulate our other ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ East students that competed Wednesday by placing in the top 10 at the Local Chamber of Commerce's National Civics Bee that took place at Lyndon Institute on April 14, 2025. Out of the ten state finalists this year, seven students were from ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ East School District! These students include: Damien Strang of Burke Town School and Bentley Allard, Averill Scott, Aiden Clark, Emelia Brothers, and Taylor Peck of Miller’s Run School.
