Updates Regarding Middle School Configurations for the 2023-24 School Year

August 9, 2023

Dear ¾«¶«´«Ã½ East Students & Families,

Last spring there were discussions throughout the district and community about moving some middle school students from some of our smaller schools to some of our larger schools due to staffing shortages.

Due to the concerns from our district's administration, staff and community members, we feel as though making this type of shift would cause too much disruption to the students, families, staff and schools affected. Throughout the summer our administration has worked tirelessly to recruit middle school math and science teachers. In July we were able to finalize the decision to not move any middle school students for the upcoming school year and continued our efforts in finding qualified candidates to fill these positions.

Regardless of the extensive efforts taken, at the end of July we still had two unfilled positions at Sutton School. Due to this predicament we have decided to move teachers from within KESD to fill the Sutton middle school math and science teaching positions.

In the weeks to come, Principals will be communicating with all families through their regular "Welcome Back to School" letters. These letters will be distributed via email and available on our website no later than Wednesday, August 23rd.

KESD will continue to engage our communities as we navigate staffing shortages. Please check our social media pages and website for regular updates regarding this matter.

We look forward to seeing all of our students fill the hallways and classrooms again on Monday, August 28th. We hope you all enjoy the tail end of summer break!

Sincerely,

Sean McMannon
